New Iron Man Spot: Mark III Assembly

We all know how stupid montages can be when they involve a superhero putting on his super-garb. Remember the in your face rubber nipple/ codpiece scene from Batman and Robin? Yeah I bet you just vomited in your mouth a little.

The newest trailer from Iron Man features Robert Downy Jr.’s tortured genius, Tony Stark, strapping on the Mark III and getting set to (hopefully) kick the crap out of some baddie. Either that or he’s going to the store to pick up some milk and couldn’t find anything else to wear.

Rendered by the same effects team that was responsible for Transformers, the detail on the suit is amazing. Like Blam at the Giz points out, they not only got the red on gold color pattern just right, but the interior of the suit is just as intricately constructed.

Iron Man comes out this Friday. Huzzah!

HP creates radical ‘memristor’ technology, brains explode

Filed under:

HP Memristor“Memristors” are one of several memory technologies that have been theorized and promised in the coming years. HP has made a real memristor, however, and the way solid state memory is created and stored could have just changed forever. First theorized in 1971, memristors are basic circuits like resistors, capacitors, and inductors. These circuits are able to store data by allowing their levels of electrical resistance to fluctuate between high and low, or 0 and 1 to a computer. Like flash memory, they retain that data without power — except they do it all on one circuit and at the speed of D-RAM. In the end, we could be looking at a whole new kind of storage, as long as someone can figure out how to get these things onto integrated circuits. Nerds hats off, return to your fanboyism — now.

Umm, Sure: Animal Head Bicycle Seat Covers

bike-heads.jpg

These are bicycle seat covers for all you pervs out there with a “sitting on animal heads” fetish. You’re my kind of people, high five! Okay, now police, round up anyone who just tried to give me a high five. Whew, now that the freaky deviants are out of here, let’s get down to business. These bike seat covers come in goat, bear, and dog varieties and all cost about $15. If you want to get the most bang for your buck though I recommend the dog or goat ones, since they’re made of way more material than the bear. I considered one, but I’m holding out for a crocodile. Have you ever sat on a crocodile’s head before? Let me tell you — it’s a rush. Like huffing airplane glue, but with more sharp teeth inches from your manhammer.

Yamaha’s notepad / keyboard hybrid concept: a songwriter’s dream

Filed under:

Yamaha’s got a thing for making dreams into reality, and we must say, we’re crossing our fingers and hoping to all that’s good and merciful in this world that the above pictured device goes commercial. Little is actually known about the keyboard / notepad hybrid aside from the fact that it was showcased at the Milano Salone trade fair in Italy, and for what it’s worth, Yamaha christened the device “key for journey.” Look, there’s even slots in the leather-bound lid so the keys have room to breathe when it’s all closed up. Ah well, a boy can dream, can’t he?

Chelpa Ferro’s foosball table is seriously wired for sound

Highly modified foosball tables are a dime a dozen, but this contraption could easily be mistook for some sort of Martian gaming machine at first glance. Dreamed up and crafted by designer Chelpa Ferro, this Tota Treme Terra looks to be a vanilla foosball table with an artsy overhead light and a hodgepodge of speakers wrapped all around. Word on the street has it that the machine belts out sound effects based on the action up above, but sadly, the actual details about this potential ninth wonder of the world are being left to our imaginations.

Portal Technology Makes For Neat Video

Remember Portal, the sweet little game that came with The Orange Box? Yeah, I heart my companion cube too. Well, using the technological basis of the game, a company has made a video demonstration of what portals would look like in the real world (and yes, it’s better than the see-through display video).

Created by EmmanuelMFr of France’s Total Immersion, the illusions in the video really are reminiscent of those in the game. Using his company’s D’FUSION software, he was able to swap the images on each virtual screen surface in real time, including full 3-dimensional transformations.

Okay now that video left me pretty confused, but I think what they’re getting at is how awesome it would be to grab a beer from the fridge without leaving the couch. And I think we can all agree that would be Nobel Prize worthy. Hell, if I could grab beer from the grocery store (and not pay) without leaving the couch, I’d even give it an Oscar.

Researchers show off laser-guided wheelchair that docks with vehicles

Filed under:

We first heard about this laser-guided wheelchair way back in 2006 but didn’t really have much more than promises from the team behind it about exactly what they had in store. As New Scientist reports, however, it seems that the folks from Lehigh University and Freedom Sciences are still hard at work at it, and they’re finally showing off some of their progress. The wheelchair is apparently still not entirely automated though, with it needing to be driven to the rear of the vehicle by remote control, after which the on-board LIDAR system kicks in and loads it onto the lift all by itself. Not surprisingly, the estimated price for the eventual commercial version has also gone up since we last heard from the team, with it now set to demand $30,000 (as opposed to $15,000 to $20,000) when it goes on sale later this year, assuming it gets the necessary FDA approval. Until then, you can head on over after the break to check it out in action.

RC-12 wireless mini video camera can record itself getting lost

Filed under:

We’ve seen a number of cameras mounted on RC vehicles before, but if you’re looking for a more out-of-the-box solution, you may want to consider this so-called RC-12 camera now available from Japan Trend Shop, which is not only smaller than most, but able to be used underwater as well. Apparently, the 2.7 megapixel camera will work up to 30 meters away with the included 1.2GHz Morse typeS receiver, and last for about 45 minutes on a single charge, which is likely more than you’ll ever want to shoot in one go, unless of course you happen to be recording some first-person footage from your next robot laser battle, which we could never possibly get enough of. As you might have guessed, however, the pint-sized kit doesn’t exactly come cheap, with it setting you back $269, plus some fairly hefty shipping charges.

Water-Cooled Shirt Keeps You, Well, Cool

cool-shirt.jpg

The Cool Shirt is a water-cooled t-shirt. It keeps you cool. Not cool in a “I’m gonna get mad laid in this Geekologie t-shirt” way, but rather in a “not warm or hot” way. They were designed for race car drivers, and pump 45-60 degree water around your nipples through 50 feet of rubber hose. You just plug the ends into a pump, and away you go. Since I couldn’t find any pricing info, and my trusty Metro doesn’t have any AC, I decided to make my own for the hot summer months. Unfortunately, the water was recently cut off in my tenement, so I had to use bourbon instead. Well this morning I was halfway to the grocery store when a crappy song came on the radio and really pissed me off. I yanked one of the tubes out of the pump and let it work all that delicious bourbon down my throat. I got drunk pretty fast (drinking out of a straw gets you drunk faster) and drove my car through a Hardees. I made the most of the situation though and had a delicious order of biscuits and gravy before the police got there. In hindsight, filling the shirt with bourbon was a bad idea. Vodka or gin is probably the way to go.

Keyboard Pants - pants with an integrated keyboard

Keyboard pantsModern portable devices surely have many abilities. Some gadgets are like computers, running on OS like Windows Mobile or Symbian, which gives users almost full PC experience. However, all portable devices lack one important detail - the comfortable keyboard for text input. Of course, you can try on-screen virtual keyboard on touchscreen devices or hardware keyboard but the buttons on them are too small to be comfortable. There are Bluetooth keyboards for this matter, but they must be carried along with the device. Maybe it is better when keyboard is always ON you?
