Bike Geek: The First Race

The first cyclocross race of the season was this past weekend. I posted some thoughts at my personal blog:

The cyclocross season kicked off today with a race at Robertson Park in Livermore. We’re in the midst of a heatwave in the Bay Area, so when I arrived at the site this morning at 7:45 AM, it was already pushing 75 degrees. By the time of my 9 AM race, it was in the 80s — I can’t even imagine how hot it was when the good racers went after 11.

I went in to the race not really having any idea what to expect. I’ve been training pretty hard, and feel like I’m much more fit than I’ve been in years, but it’s never the same as actually competing. If you had told me that I’d go out there and get crushed, I would have believed it; if you told me that I’d win, I guess I would have believed that too.

The reality was somewhere in between.

Rumor: Nintendo DS 3rd-gen arriving in April 2009

Remember the new Nintendo DS rendering previously which expected to be the next-gen Nintendo DS. Someone found out that it is just a mock up. The next-gen Nintendo DS will be making an appearance probably somewhere in April or May which believe to have wide aspect ratio on both screens and will be touch-sensitive. Again, it is still under rumors, nothing is confirmed.

Bushnell BackTrack GPS Navigation System

Amazon is selling these really handy backtrack GPS navigation systems for only $60. This is a new product from Bushnell, a company that’s been involved in outdoor tools for many years. We think that’s a great price for a handy gadget that could literally save your life on your next outdoor trip if you do get lost.

They are advertising this simple GPS navigation system more for everyday use such as at the mall and stadium parking lots, at the festival, etc… but think how useful this could be for hiking, camping, kayaking, and mostly skiing.

Here are features from their site:

  • Store and locate up to three locations
  • Utilizes the latest digital technology
  • High sensitivity SiRF Star III GPS reciever
  • Self calibrating digital compass
  • Weather resistant
  • Operates on 2 AAA Batteries (Not Included)
  • Compact size stores easily in your pocket or purse
  • Lanyard included for easy attachment

The only problem we see is that you can only store 3 locations! That sometimes may not be enough but at this price you can buy two of these and have 6 locations stored :) We’ll be sure to get in touch with them and see if they are talking about 3 destinations with multiple waypoints or just 3 waypoints.

Arrrrr you prepared for Talk Like a Pirate Day with fonts?

Are you ready for Talk Like a Pirate Day? It’s September 19th (same date every year), so it’s coming up fast. I recently stumbled across some really nice pirate fonts online. This one is called Windlass, for example:

Windlass font

Hat-tip to KPAO! which is a fun blog.

Every time I start looking at fonts, I always surface 3-4 hours later realizing that I would have a serious font problem once I started. For example, did you know that you can make a font online for free? Watch the screencast to learn more.

Or you can make a font out of your handwriting for free. You print out a page of letters, write each letter in the predefined box, scan the page, and upload it. According to this page you can use a coupon code of “YourFont2008″ to make sure that it’s free. I’ve printed out the pages but haven’t written/scanned my handwriting yet.

Fun stuff, but it’s amazing how you can start with one website with free fonts and quickly burn an entire afternoon. )

PSP Phat and Slim Keyboard

Just because the Xbox360 Chatpad wasn’t designed to work with the PSP doesn’t mean that some creative and skilled people can’t make it happen! The PSP Phat and Slim Keyboard is proof of that.

"Hey all talk a look at my Microsoft Xbox360 Chatpad connected to my PSP Phat and Slim. Thanks to Jean over at ps2dev.org and this project that he developed we can all have nice keyboards connected to our PSP’s. My PSP’s are running CFW 4.01 M33-2, a special version of piKey and a custom flash on the Chatpad. Text input is a breeze and it works with the Sony OSK (on screen keyboard) and the Danzeff OSK under AFKIM. It does not work with PSPWrite and other ZX-81 applications because they are not compiled to do so but Jean is working on a compatible drive to make them work natively."

Could This be Why Google Chrome Faster Than Other Browsers?

Ok, first things first: personal tests have shown that Google’s new browser is faster than what’s currently available. Not bad for an app currently in early beta stage. But Douglas did have something to say about that:

Keep in mind that every new browser or version of browser always has a speed advantage… until they plug up the security holes. We see this in every browser comparison on a new release.

Makes sense. Let’s see what happens as Google fixes everything up—if they ever take Chrome off “Beta” status. Anyways, what do you think of the new browser? So far so good, but some bugs crop up from time to time. We still have to use Firefox to get anything in Facebook for instance.

Awesome Pong Watch Tells Time Through Score

The concept’s so simple it’s pure genius: a game of Pong is automatically “played” on the watch face, with the left side score representing the hours, and the right side the minutes. As the hours and minutes pass by, the appropriate side “loses” to keep the score matched to the current time. Let’s hope John Maushammer is interested in getting someone to mass-produce his homemade work of art. But in the meantime, fellow engineers are invited to check out his build log and plans.
